WMCU 89.7 Spririt FM Sold

Posted: September 27, 2007 in Miami, Personal

Some background regarding the sale of WMCU.  According to Minneapolis St Paul Business Journal the purchase comes less than a week after a planned deal(for a similar amount) by American Public Media to buy WGTS, a Christian radio station in the Washington, D.C. area, fell through.

The Columbia Union College board of trustees voted to stop all negotiations to sell its Takoma Park Christian radio station WGTS.  The college, which is controlled by the Seventh Day Adventist Church.  In a turn of events, the board decided to “rescind the action to enter into negotiations to sell the radio station license,” according to a statement from the college. If you are interested to read the entire story you can do it here

Personally I would love to hear more from TIU regarding this choice.  As far as I have seen, there is nothing on their website that explains this decision to sell.   The only information that is given is what you can read on WMCU’s web site If you want to leave a comment to Trinity International University you can do so by clicking on this link.

I am truely sad for the gap that this will leave in our community.  I know of several people that have been away from God and the local churches, but for some reason they listened to WMCU.  There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1).  Is this that time, only time will tell?

APMG was simultaneously pursing WMCU along with WGTS. The deal was actually struck BEFORE the Board meeting about WGTS. Rumor had leaked about the sale to APMG as early as Thursday Morning on the 20th…

In my opinion, Trinity International Foundation made an enormous error in selling the Radio Station. I am fully aware that God allowed this to happen, however He also allows us to “put our foot in it”. While the foundation’s mission through Trinity International University is noble and applauded “advance what God is doing globally by educating and equipping future pastors, missionaries, counselors, educators and other ministers to share the gospel of Jesus Christ” (taken from TIU website), the expense at which it came is that of terminating over 30 years of Christian radio “Ministry” for South Florida and leaving hundreds of thousands of listeners hanging.

The “means does not justify the cause” in this situation.

WMCU was not just a radio station, it was a ministry and a friend. I surrendered my life to Christ 10 yrs. ago, one afternoon listening to WMCU. I cannot count the times God used the station to correct, bring comfort & uplift my family and me. You have blessed us for many years and even to the end, in which you handled this situation, you have ministered to us all. You surrendered and encouraged us to Trust in the Lord. And that we will.

So long, old friend. We will miss you.

Just so that everyone knows, I will not publish posts that are annonymous.

Christian satcasters have been buying out small non-coms for years and often attempting to force out vunerable highschool stations. Nice to see the tables turned.

  5. Mathias –
Greetings! PLEASE let people know the other side of the story about WMCU. There is a growing grassroots movement to try and overturn the sale. It is NOT a done deal but still has to be approved by the FCC. People can go to SaveWMCU.com for additional information. I would encourage them to fill out the contact form to receive updates.

PLEASE post this info on your website near the top, rather than just a link to the “official” word from TIU on their justification to pull $20M in resources out of SE FL!

    Shalom,
    Stan

I remember in 1977, when I first came to South Florida, WMCU was on the air. From that day to this in 2008, I felt close to the station. i attended and graduated from Trinity College and had hoped that some day I would maybe get the chance to do some radio work (for the Lord of course). I was and am so sorry to see this station leave. I read that it wasn’t a done deal. I hope we can band together in south florida and save this wonderful station with the wonderful people who have ministered to us over the years.
